Magnolia’s ‘Challenge’ includes showdown with Bishop Amat

They are ranked one right above the other, and they will be the marquee matchup Saturday at the Southern Section Team Challenge at Magnolia High.
Bishop Amat (14-2), No. 12 in The Times’ girls’ basketball rankings, will faced No. 13 Magnolia (12-4) at 8 p.m.
Since losing back-to-back games to No. 1 Miller and No. 11 Lynwood, Kristen McCarthy and her Bishop Amat teammates have won three in a row, including a 61-58 decision over No. 14 Perris.
Behind Jhakia McDonald, Magnolia also has a three-game winning streak. It sandwiched victories over Perris and No. 21 Foothill around its last loss, 59-49, to Lynwood.
Here’s the schedule for the day’s varsity games at Magnolia:
Bakersfield Stockdale (13-2) vs. Rancho Verde (7-10), 2 p.m.
Norco (12-5) vs. Ventura (15-1), 3:30 p.m.
Esperanza (7-9) vs. Etiwanda (11-5), 5 p.m.
Huntington Beach (14-3) vs. No. 9 Santa Margarita (15-2), 6:30 p.m.
No. 12 Bishop Amat (14-2) vs. No. 13 Magnolia (12-4), 8 p.m.
