Seven of the top-ranked wrestlers in the Southern Section are slated for either the 140- or 189-pound weight classes at this weekend’s Dick Comly Invitational at Victor Valley College, possibly setting up some intriguing showdowns in the later rounds.
The lineup at 189 pounds should feature top-ranked Caleb Gerl of Downey Calvary Chapel, No. 2 Danny Reyes of Hesperia, No. 5 David Moore of Sultana and No. 6 Keny Breaux of Carter. Reyes is coming off a fifth-place finish at last weekend’s Five Counties tournament, where he went 4-2. Moore did not place at the event, going 3-2, and did not face Reyes. Gerl and Breaux did not wrestle at the tournament.
Three of the top four 140-pound wrestlers should be at the Dick Comly tournament -- No. 1 Cody Bollinger of Sultana, No. 2 Nikko Cataline of Corona Roosevelt and No. 4 Eric Lopez of Hesperia. All three took part in Five Counties -- Bollinger defeated Cataline, 6-4, in the championship semifinals on his way to the individual title. Cataline finished sixth with a 4-3 record, and Lopez did not place, finishing 4-2, and did not face either Bollinger or Cataline. Earlier this month, however, Bollinger defeated Lopez, 6-3, during a dual meet.
Sultana is the defending team champion at the 41st annual event.
