The Jordan boys’ basketball team had not lost an Eastern League game since 2005, but that 42-game winning streak came to a halt on Friday at Bell, where as the host Eagles upended the Bulldogs, 50-40.
The loss not only threw the league race into a virtual three-way tie between Bell, Jordan and Roosevelt -- all three have one league loss; Bell and Jordan have won six league games and Roosevelt five -- it could have wiped out the playoff seeding goodwill Jordan built up with earlier victories over Dorsey, King-Drew and Gardena.
Jordan Coach Van Myers was quick to praise Bell for its inspired play, but he also noted the Bulldogs played without center James Boyd because of disciplinary issues. And Boyd will not get off the Jordan bench or Myer’s doghouse until next Friday’s game against Roosevelt.
This is not the first time Boyd has done something to draw the ire of his coaches. He was sat down a couple of times during the football season by Coach Elijah Asante. When is Boyd going to get it that he is hurting teammates -- not to mention whatever interest he is drawing from colleges -- when he acts this way, instead of acting like a leader?
