Newbury Park RB Chris Brown, who rushed for 1,904 yards in 2007, will miss the next three to six weeks because of a back injury, said Newbury Park Athletic Coordinator George Hurley.
The Utah-bound speedster broke his fifth lumbar vertebra during the Panthers’ 14-7 victory over Camarillo on Friday and spent the weekend in the hospital. According to Hurley, Brown actually had a sore back going into the game and his vertebra could have been bruised during practice the previous week.
Although the Panthers are still favored to win Friday night’s contest at Rio Mesa, Brown’s injury will complicate Newbury Park’s ability to repeat as Marmonte League champions.
Newbury Park will have to rely heavily on sophomore QB Jake Geringer and junior RB Cameron Roberson to carry the offense. Both have shown a lot of promise, though, and could very well be the future stars of the program.
