The City Section has decided to eliminate junior varsity playoffs for the 2009-2010 sports season because of a cut in transportation funding. Also eliminated are freshman-sophomore post-season play in cross-country, track and field and swimming.
In another cost-saving move, the boys’ freshman and sophomore basketball season held in the fall and the girls’ freshman and sophomore basketball season in the spring will be eliminated.
Instead, a freshman-sophomore team will be added to the winter season, leaving teams with a varsity, junior varsity and frosh-soph team.
‘Although no cuts or reductions are ever desirable, these two reductions are necessary at this time to ease the budget concern, and to avoid removing the opportunity for students to participate in their desired sport,’ City Section Commissioner Barbara Fiege said in an email.
