Get ready for high school version of Lakers-Celtics

It’s a great day for high school basketball fans in Southern California, because tonight, the game of the year is taking place at Westchester High. It’s No. 1 Westchester (3-0) versus No. 2 Woodland Hills Taft (3-0) at 7:30 p.m. in the championship game of the Westchester tournament.

I count at least nine players on the two teams whom I expect to receive NCAA Division I scholarships. You have two premier coaches, Ed Azzam and Derrick Taylor, ready to match wits, before what should be a packed crowd and lots of college recruiters.

And let’s talk about elite guards. What a matchup between Westchester’s trio of Jordin Mayes, Kareem Jamar and Denzel Douglas against Taft’s trio of Spencer Dinwiddie, Landon Drew and Bryce Jones.

Then there’s 6-foot-6 Dwayne Polee Jr. of Westchester going against Taft’s 6-7 De’Andre Daniels, who looks at times like a future NBA player.

Of course, these two teams figure to have a rematch in the City Section Division I championship game come March and perhaps in the Southern California Regionals.

If you can’t make it, Ben Bolch will be blogging from Westchester. This is a better ticket than Lakers-Celtics for those who love high school basketball.
