The city Department of Transportation has awarded a nearly $10,000 contract to Crain & Associates to conduct a ridership survey of the Torrance Transit System.
The on-board survey of transit riders will determine trip origins, destinations and purposes, passenger demographics, frequency of use and the availability of alternate means of transportation.
A transit spokesman said the information will be used to establish a marketing program for the system. The report is expected to be completed by March 1.
The Torrance Transit System is the main mass transportation carrier in the South Bay. In 1983-84, the total ridership exceeded 3.1 million passengers.
