El Camino Real 34, Monroe 32 Rick Hergott sank a seven-foot shot with three seconds left in overtime to give El Camino Real a come-from-behind 34-32 victory over Monroe in the Valley 4-A League opener for both teams.
El Camino Real, which is 9-3 overall, was heavily favored but Monroe went to a spread offense after taking the lead early in the second quarter. The Vikings held the lead until the fourth quarter.
Monroe, which is 3-8 overall, had one last chance when Hergot fouled Warlette Brown with no time left, but Brown missed his first shot. The Vikings also missed all nine second-half free throws. El Camino wasn’t much better, going 4 for 15 from the line.
“We just can’t shoot the ball,” El Camino coach Mike McNulty said.
