Senate Majority Leader Robert J. Dole (R-Kan.) said he hopes the Senate can confirm James A. Baker III, the current White House chief of staff, as the new Treasury secretary by the end of the week. Dole said he hoped the Senate could vote on Baker to succeed the current secretary, Donald T. Regan, in the Cabinet post on Friday.
