The Montebello City Council has adopted an ordinance to reduce the number of false-alarm calls received by the police.
Under the new ordinance a $10 permit is required for all burglar alarms in the area, whether new or already installed, and alarm companies doing business in Montebello must register with the city and obtain a business license. In addition, anyone who reports more than four false alarms in a year may be cited.
Currently, 98% of the alarms the Montebello police respond to are false alarms, and the number of incoming false-alarm calls has increased 35% in the past six years.
