The Justice Department sided with white teachers who lost their jobs in an Indiana school district with a collective bargaining contract stating blacks would be protected from layoffs. The department filed the “friend of the court” brief in the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago on behalf of a group of white teachers from South Bend, Ind. The South Bend Community School Corp.’s “no-minority layoff provision . . . unnecessarily trammels the interests of innocent employees,” the brief said.
