San Diego Roundup : Hall of Champions to Feature Portraits

SAN DIEGO — Portraits of 30 sports stars will be displayed at the San Diego Hall of Champions in Balboa Park beginning Saturday.
Among the athletes and coaches featured are Babe Ruth, Althea Gibson, Arnold Palmer, Bear Bryant, Joe Namath and Dorothy Hamill. The exhibits selected are among nearly 900 portraits that had been donated to the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute.
San Diego State will play host to an all-star gymnastics meet for 5- to 19-year-olds Saturday and Sunday at Peterson Gym.
Warm-ups begin at 8:30 a.m. both days. Competition starts at 10:15 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. Tickets are $3 for adults and $1.50 for children under 18.
Bob Hope and Gerald Ford will headline the field in the Celebrity Pro-Am of the Andy Williams San Diego Open on Wednesday at Torrey Pines.
Among the athletes scheduled to participate are Steve Garvey, Dan Fouts, Goose Gossage, Graig Nettles, Terry Kennedy and Rolf Benirschke. There will be a $20,000 purse for the event, which precedes the pro tournament set for Thursday through Sunday.
Jim Rutledge, of Victoria, British Columbia, shot a final-round 67 Thursday to win the $3,500 first prize in a National Golf Assn. tournament at the Cottonwood Golf Course in El Cajon. Rutledge had a three-round score of 208.
