The World : Pakistan Curbs Opposition

Pakistani President Zia ul-Haq’s martial-law government banned a meeting, scheduled for today, of the 11-party opposition alliance, the Movement for Restoration of Democracy, which is urging voters to boycott the Feb. 25 parliamentary elections on the grounds that they will not be “free, fair and impartial.” Pakistani newspapers also reported that the government arrested dozens of opposition leaders in an attempt to derail the planned boycott. Among those arrested under martial-law regulations was the alliance leader, Fatehyab Ali Khan, the papers said.
