The newly formed canine unit of the San Diego Police Department was used for the first time Wednesday, and Mike, one of the unit’s 14 German shepherds, helped to find two burglary suspects. Responding to a report of two men seen entering a San Diego insurance company office at 7:05 a.m., police found a ladder leading up to the building’s attic. After a search of the attic turned up nothing, police summoned the canine unit and the dog found the two men, who had been hiding in insulation material in the attic, police said. Arrested were John Michael Goodman, 30, and Richard Utley, 33, both on suspicion of burglary. The canine unit will be officially deployed Monday when the dogs graduate from the department’s training program at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot.
