College Tennis Roundup : No. 2 USC Avoids UCI’s Upset Bid

The UC Irvine men’s tennis team, ahead of No. 2-ranked USC, 4-2, after singles play Saturday, lost all its doubles matches and fell to the Trojans, 5-4, at the Irvine Racquet Club.
At first singles, UCI’s Bruce Man Son Hing upset Todd Witsken (ranked No. 4 in the country), 7-6, 6-7, 6-4. Irvine’s Stephen Aniston defeated Rich Leach (No. 16), 6-4, 6-2. Ken Derr and Julian Barham also won singles matches for Irvine.
The Anteaters (ranked No. 11) travel to Malibu Wednesday to meet Pepperdine (No. 5) in a 1 p.m. match.
Chapman 8, Nevada Las Vegas 1--The Panthers swept the singles matches at the Anaheim Tennis Center. The Panthers’ Troy Turnbull beat Scott Warner, 6-3, 7-6, and Terrell Davis downed Tom Sullivan, 6-3, 7-6. Turnbull and Davis teamed to win the No. 1 doubles match for Chapman (4-5). Chapman visits Cal State Los Angeles Tuesday.
In women’s action:
UC Irvine 7, Fresno State 2--The Anteaters won the top four singles matches and all three doubles matches against the Bulldogs at Irvine.
The victory improves the Anteaters’ record to 8-7. Their next match is 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at UCLA.
Cal State Bakersfield 9, Chapman 0--The Panthers suffered their fourth straight defeat in California Collegiate Athletic Assn. play, losing to the Roadrunners at home.
