NEW YORK — The Rev. Dr. Arthur Caliandro has succeeded the Rev. Dr. Norman Vincent Peale as senior minister at the Marble Collegiate Church, the nation’s oldest continuous congregation.
Peale, 86, known nationally for folksy preaching and promotion of “positive thinking,” stepped down after 52 years.
Caliandro, 51, joined the church staff in 1967. In assuming the pulpit, he pledged to foster the church’s unofficial motto: “Big-city church, small-town feeling.”
The church, founded in 1628, has 2,500 members and is part of the Reformed Church of America.
