Canyon Areas Get New Phone Service
General Telephone Co. has extended its service area to the remote San Gabriel Canyon areas of Follows Camp, Camp Williams and Crystal Lake with a new system that replaces lines maintained by the U. S. Forest Service and county Flood Control District.
The Public Utilities Commission authorized the service, which uses microwave installations at Crystal Lake, East Fork and Pine Mountain to relay calls to General Telephone’s Covina switching office. The microwave system replaces cable lines that often were damaged in storms. The new system gives the canyon its own telephone exchange and prefix--910.
