The scenic route of the Amtrak San Diegan is the second busiest in the country. The seven sleek trains that clatter through Orange County on their way from San Diego to Los Angeles and back each day carry about 1.2 million passengers a year--6% of Amtrak’s ridership, according to Amtrak’s Arthur Lloyd. Lloyd expects the number of Orange County riders to exceed 870,000 before the end of 1985.
The San Diegan will probably become even more heavily traveled. Irvine officials envision a $38-million package of improvements that would allow passenger trains to stop there without delaying freight lines. And the state hopes to more than double ridership in five years by offering more fare discounts, better connecting bus service and faster service between cities.
