The second California condor to be hatched in captivity this year broke out of its shell Monday afternoon at the San Diego Zoo, officials said. The chick, named “Malibu,” hatched with very little help from keepers, zoo spokesman Jeff Jouett said.
The egg was brought to the zoo from its next in Ventura County on April 23. Since only one breeding pair of condors remains in the wild, Malibu is known to be a sibling of Kaweah, hatched at the zoo April 11.
