Apple Computer to Idle 1,200

CUPERTINO, Calif. — Apple Computer Inc., the nation’s second-largest personal computer maker, announced today that it will eliminate 1,200 jobs in the first large-scale layoffs in the company’s history.
In announcing the cuts as part of a massive reorganization of the company, President and Chief Executive Officer John Sculley also said Apple will report a loss for the third fiscal quarter. The layoffs will occur in Garden Grove, Calif., Dallas and Ireland.
