Curren, Cash, Mayotte Among Upset Victims

It was an upsetting day for seeded players in the Queen’s Club men’s grass-court tennis tournament Friday.

No. 2 Kevin Curren of South Africa, No. 3 Pat Cash of Australia, No. 5 Tim Mayotte, No. 8 David Pate and No. 9 Paul Annacone were all eliminated.

Boris Becker scored two of the upsets as players in the London tournament were forced to play twice because of rain delays.

The 17-year-old West German, seeded No. 11, ousted Pate in the third round, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3, and then stunned Cash, 6-4, 6-4, in a match that lasted only 67 minutes.

Paul McNamee of Australia defeated Mayotte, 7-6, 7-5, and will meet Becker in the semifinals.

Curren was ousted in a third-round match by Annacone, 6-7, 7-6, 8-6. Annacone was then surprised by Slobodan Zivojinovic of Yugoslavia, 7-5, 6-1.

Zivojinovic will not know the identity of his opponent until No. 4-seeded Johan Kriek meets New Zealand’s Russell Simpson in the remaining quarterfinal match today.

With Pam Shriver leading the way, Americans made a clean sweep of the quarterfinals in the Edgbaston Cup women’s tournament at Birmingham, England.

Shriver defeated Britain’s Anne Hobbs, 6-4, 6-0; Elise Burgin beat Robin White, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4; Susan Mascarin upset Alycia Moulton, 7-6, 6-4, and Betsy Nagelsen ousted Ann Henricksson, 6-3, 6-3.
