Land of the Pueblos

In your May 5 edition, there was a fine article on the Indian Pueblo of Cochiti that I enjoyed very much as it brought back many memories of my childhood (“Mixing Old and New in the Land of the Pueblos,” by Charles Hillinger).

I was living there the year that Jim Thorpe won medals in the Olympic Games (1912). For some strange and wonderful reason, the Indians were aware of the news even though we had no lines of communication other than a dirt road to the railroad station at Domingo. There was a telegraph office there, but no information had come from that source, so it must have been brought by the Jemez Indian runners. When I asked the Indian kids how they knew about Thorpe, they would just smile and say, “It came on the Wind.”
