Police are investigating the Thursday night shooting of a 17-year-old Newport Beach youth after an officer’s gun discharged during a struggle with the teen-ager.
Newport Beach police said they responded to a call about a suspicious-looking man on the roof of See’s Candy Shop, 3501 E. Coast Highway, about 11 p.m. The youth allegedly ran from the rear of the store when officers arrived and struggled as officers tried to apprehend him, according to police.
The youth was shot in the side when an officer’s gun discharged during the altercation, police said. He was taken to Fountain Valley Community Hospital where he underwent surgery and was listed in satisfactory condition Friday, police said.
Officer Tom Little said he doesn’t anticipate that charges will be filed against the youth because no evidence of a crime was found at the scene.
