The company’s Santa Paula seed production facility 100 miles northwest of Los Angeles will remain open, but the Lompoc outlet 80 miles further northwest will close at the end of the year. The future of W. Atlee Burpee Co.’s Floradale Farms and its 14 longtime employees remains to be decided, said Andrew Learned, Burpee’s Lompoc branch manager for 33 years. Burpee opened in Lompoc in 1909. Employees are being offered severance pay, extended medical insurance and other benefits or some transfers or help in gaining employment with other seed firms, Learned said.
