‘Red Light for Reynolds’
Once again McCarthyism of the left raises its head, this time by Raspberry’s attack on William Bradford Reynolds.
Reynolds wants to enforce the 1964 Civil Rights Act as written and intended by its sponsors--to forbid racial quotas and prevent reverse discrimination. He is against forced busing. For these attitudes, which reflect the Administration’s, and a majority of Americans’ (including a majority of blacks) view, Reynolds has unjustly become the target of a smear campaign to discredit him.
It is ironic that liberals insist on keeping the California Supreme Court powerful by freeing it from legislative and voter restraint, no matter how unpopular its philosophy and decisions; yet they see no inconsistency in screaming for Reynold’s head because they disagree with the Administration’s civil rights policies.
