South African athletes have been banned from competing in next year’s International Games for the Disabled.
The ban, announced on the closing day of this year’s games at Stoke Mandeville, England, followed a boycott of the event by four nations--the United States, Canada, Zimbabwe and Trinidad and Tobago--because a South African team competed.
The South Africans took 36 medals at the games, which were marred by anti-apartheid demonstrations against the inclusion of the 20 disabled South African competitors, all but one of whom were white.
