Response to Views of GOP Chairman
The remarks of Orange County Republican Chairman Thomas Fuentes comparing Democrats to “good Germans denying the existence of the Holocaust” (Aug. 5) is another example of how ideologues destroy the very foundational principles of American participatory government by rejecting reasonableness and political debate in favor of obfuscation, hysterical rhetoric and intolerance of differing opinions.
It is unfortunate that the Republican Party, so comfortable with fascistic regimes throughout the world, should also like to eliminate in Orange County the very pluriformity required for a free people.
I am embarrassed by Fuentes’ official connection with the Diocese of Orange. It is a position that is too often exploited for political purposes. Perhaps that relationship can soon be terminated.
