Canadian national champion Stephane Bonneau, ranked 212th in the world, upset 17th-ranked Tomas Smid of Czechoslovakia, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, Tuesday night in the first round of the $375,000 Canadian Open at Montreal.
“I couldn’t believe it,” said Bonneau, 23, who entered the tournament as a wild card. “I’ve never beaten a player in the top 20 in the world. I have trouble beating the top 20 in Canada.”
Bonneau, of Laval, Quebec, was clearly the favorite of the crowd of 4,000.
“People were waiting for me to make a big upset,” he said. “They were behind me. I’m happy it happened tonight.”
Meanwhile, Ivan Lendl, Smid’s Davis Cup teammate, had a hard-fought but victorious debut, teaming with Jacob Hlasek to beat former USC players Roger Knapp and Eric Van’t Hof in doubles, 7-6, 7-6.
In singles, Lendl and other top-seeded players, including defending champion John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors, were all given byes until today.
At Mahwah, N.J., the $150,000 United Jersey Bank tournament was delayed for 25 minutes after a woman telephoned at 1:45 p.m. and said a bomb would explode at 2 p.m.
Sixth-seeded Kathy Rinaldi and Belinda Cordwell of New Zealand had their match interrupted by the threat as about 1,000 people were evacuated from the stands while police searched the grounds. No bomb was discovered.
The score was tied, 2-2, in the opening set when play was stopped.
“There’s never a dull moment at this tournament,” said Rinaldi, who went on to win the match, 7-6, 6-2.
