Bryant-Vanalden Mass Eviction
In regard to the Los Angeles City Council’s plan to approve mass evictions of Latino tenants from a Northridge neighborhood, we find it a blatantly racist policy that violates the civil rights of these people. As stated in the article it is extremely hypocritical for the council to adopt sanctions against companies doing business in South Africa and then go on to approve such a plan.
While the City Council is supposedly doing its utmost to alleviate the deplorable homeless situation in this city, the action taken on Aug. 8 will in effect be throwing poor families out onto the streets. The state Department of Housing and Community Development conducted a study that revealed that one of the major causes for the recent rise in homelessness is the severe shortage of housing available to low-income persons. The $1,000 moving allowance the Council feels justifies their actions, will be of no help to these families when no housing is available.
I strongly urge the City Council and Mayor Tom Bradley to consider the plight of these families as opposed to the interests of the slumlords.
