A Santa Clara County Superior Court jury found Richard Bowen guilty of attempted murder in trying to kill his wife, Susan, with cyanide-laced sleeping pills. Prosecutor Lane Liroff suggested to jurors that Bowen, a former San Jose Mercury News circulation manager, had poisoned the Dalmane capsules to collect on an insurance policy he had taken out on his 33-year-old wife.
