At Bassano Del Grappa, Italy, Rebecca Twigg won the world title in the women 3,000-meter individual pursuit to give the United States its first gold medal in the 1985 track cycling championships.
The 22-year-old cyclist from Seattle defeated France’s Jeannie Longo in the final, in a replay of last year’s world race at Barcelona, Spain.
In winning her second straight world title and her third since 1982, Twigg was clocked in 3 minutes 52.75 seconds, an average speed of 28.7 m.p.h.
