Broyhill to Seek East’s Seat; GOP Fight Likely

WASHINGTON — Rep. James T. Broyhill announced Friday that he will seek to succeed retiring Sen. John P. East, setting up a primary fight between two wings of the North Carolina Republican Party,
Broyhill’s main opponent for the GOP nomination is David Funderburk, a former ambassador to Romania, who is endorsed by East and the National Congressional Club, the right-wing political action committee that backed the reelection campaign of Sen. Jesse Helms (R-N. C.) last year.
