Long Island Scallop Crop Almost Destroyed by Algae

EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. — The state will import scallops from New England and transplant them in Peconic Bay to replace scallops destroyed by a growth of algae caused by fertilizer runoffs and septic tank overflows, officials said.
This year’s Long Island scallop crop, normally a $1.2-million industry, is almost a total loss, officials said Friday.
