Greatly enjoyed Betty Hughes’ “Cross-Country Odyssey” Aug. 18, especially as we have crisscrossed the areas she mentioned a number of times. . . . May we suggest southern Idaho, the Sawtooth region where Clint Eastwood’s “Pale Rider” was filmed. Only do not try the road from Stanley to Warm Lake/Cascade area in an RV. It’s even scary to walk. . . . She mentioned Steinbeck’s “Travels With Charlie.” An even better book, we think, re back roads: “Blue Highways” by William Least Heat Moon (an Indian name, a.k.a. William Trogdon) . . . a better knack of digging up little-known facts about back towns and secondary-highway towns.
