Bankers Trust New York Corp., the nation’s ninth-largest banking company, said its profit climbed 19% in the third quarter. Another leading banking company, Continental Illinois Corp., posted a profit of $35.8 million and said it had made “substantial progress” toward reducing its reliance on loans from the government and other banks. Bankers Trust, the New York-based parent of Bankers Trust, the nation’s eighth-largest bank, attributed the third-quarter performance to increases in fees, commissions and trust and custodian income, a lower provision for loan losses and a $13.3-million gain due to changes in New York city and state tax laws. Continental Illinois, the Chicago-based banking company that ranks as the nation’s 12th largest, said its results are not comparable with results a year ago because the company underwent a restructuring on Sept. 26, 1984, in the wake of the largest bank run in history and a $1.16-billion loss in the second quarter of that year.
