Darrell Waltrip moved a little farther ahead in the Winston Cup title chase with a hard-earned victory in the Nationwise 500 Grand National stock car race Sunday at North Carolina Motor Speedway in Rockingham, N.C.
Waltrip’s third victory of the season, combined with a fourth-place finish by Bill Elliott, increased Waltrip’s Winston Cup lead by 15 points with two races remaining. Waltrip has 3,971 points to Elliott’s 3,936.
Elliott, who has a season-high 11 victories, led only once during the race--earning the five-point bonus for leading a lap by moving on top on lap 206 during a caution period. Waltrip led six times for a total of 72 laps, including the last 31.
Waltrip finished six car-lengths ahead of Ron Bouchard, beating the second-place car to the finish line by .93 seconds. Waltrip earned $40,900 by averaging 118.344 m.p.h. for 492 laps in taking the 67th victory of his Grand National career.
