A burglary suspect was fatally wounded by a Santa Monica police officer who found him allegedly trying to break into a restaurant safe with a crowbar. Investigators said Officer Michael Van Achen, 31, and his partner were dispatched to the Chez Jay in the 1600 block of Ocean Avenue. They said they identified themselves as police and ordered Roy Lee Vickery, 30, to drop the crowbar, but that he advanced on Van Achen, who fired once. Vickery, also known as Patrick Lance Anderson, was pronounced dead at Santa Monica Hospital.
