General in Temple Raid Gets High Post in India

NEW DELHI — Gen. Krishnaswami Sunderji, 57, who helped supervise an assault on Sikh extremists in Amritsar’s Golden Temple last year, will be appointed India’s chief of army staff, a Defense Ministry spokesman said Thursday. He will replace Gen. Arun Vaidya, who retires next February.
In June, 1984, he headed the Western Command when troops moved into the Sikhs’ holiest shrine in northern Punjab state to root out separatists. The defense spokesman declined to comment on Sunderji’s role during the savage battle in which about 1,000 people died.
