BEIRUT — Iran said Saturday that its forces killed or wounded at least 50 Iraqi soldiers in 24 hours of border battles. Iraq reported killing 28 Iranian soldiers.
An Iranian military statement said that Iranian artillery and mortars pounded Iraqi units in the central sector of the battle zone, wrecking several bunkers while Iranian units captured a “considerable” amount of ammunition and grenades.
In Baghdad, a military statement said Iraqi forces launched a fierce attack on Iranian positions in the same area in a 24-hour period with all kinds of heavy weapons, killing 28 and wounding “a number” of others.
“Ten Iranian bunkers, a mortar position and a radar station were destroyed and an amount of weapons were seized in the successful attack,” an Iraqi military spokesman said.
On the southern front, five Iraqi boats and some Iraqi patrols came under artillery fire while sporadic Iraqi shelling hit the cities of Abadan and Khorramshahr.
