Wife of Ex-Pitcher Clay Carroll Shot Dead in Family Argument

BRADENTON, Fla. — Clay Carroll, who led the major leagues with 37 saves in 1972, was wounded and his wife was killed Saturday night in a shooting during a family argument, police said.

Carroll, 44, was in serious but stable condition at L.W. Blake Memorial Hospital. Carroll’s wife, Fran, 53, was killed. Their 11-year-old son, Brett, was also shot and was in critical condition.

The Manatee County Sheriff’s Dept. said Carroll’s stepson, Frederick Nowitzke, had been arrested as a suspect in the shooting, but no charges had been filed.

Carroll had a record of 96-73 during his 15-year career in the major leagues, which started in 1964 with Milwaukee. He had 143 saves and a career ERA of 2.94.
