SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The body of a young police officer was buried alongside his slain partner Tuesday.
An estimated 7,000 police officers stood and saluted the bronze coffin of Patrolman Alan Beauregard, 29, of Springfield. Beauregard was buried next to Patrolman Michael Schiavina, 28, who was interred Saturday in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
Beauregard and Schiavina were gunned down Tuesday night while making what is believed to have been a routine automobile check. Schiavina was shot in the chest and died within hours. Beauregard, who was shot in the face, died Friday night after three days on a respirator.
The teen-ager suspected of shooting the officers, Eduardo Ortiz, 18, of Springfield, shot himself to death in a closet after police cornered him.
