A fire that had inched its way through underground oil shale along California 150 in Ventura County for a month has been extinguished, but officials said the road may be closed to daytime traffic for the rest of November. About 250 feet of highway shoulder was excavated to battle the fire, and one lane of the two-lane road was obliterated, Bruce Dyar of Caltrans said. It will take several days to repair the road between Ojai and Santa Paula, he said. The oil shale started smoldering during the Ferndale fire, which charred 45,710 acres, beginning Oct. 13.
