Bart Recktenwald and Kevin Rice scored three touchdowns each to lead La Quinta High School to a 42-7 victory over Woodbridge in a Central Conference playoff opener Friday night before 2,000 fans in Garden Grove Stadium.
The Aztecs (9-2) broke the game open with 21 points in the second quarter. Woodbridge, which finished 6-4-1, lost its leading rusher, David Townsend, with an ankle injury early in the game.
La Quinta jumped ahead on a 53-yard punt return by Recktenwald with 5:10 remaining in the first quarter. Rice, who rushed for 72 yards in 12 carries, then scored on a three-yard run early in the second quarter to begin the rout.
Recktenwald, who gained 105 yards in 16 carries, scored on a four-yard run for a 21-0 lead and Rice’s one-yard run capped a big second quarter and assured the victory.
