A former Tulane University basketball player and two students sentenced for their part in a point-shaving scheme escaped prison terms but were ordered to give their gambling proceeds to charity.
Bobby Thompson, a senior guard who pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit sports bribery, was fined $2,000 and given a two-year suspended sentence.
Criminal District Court Judge Alvin Oser also said Thompson must spend five years on probation, put in three months of community service and make restitution of $4,000 by donating it to the United Way.
Thompson, 22, of New Orleans, was one of three Tulane players indicted in the scheme to fix the point spread of two Metro Conference games last spring and reap thousands of dollars by gambling on the outcome.
