New York Gov. Mario M. Cuomo, acting on a Christmas Eve plea from Mother Teresa, released three prison inmates with AIDS into the care of the Nobel Peace Prize winner. The inmates, all serving time at Sing Sing state prison on robbery convictions, were transferred to St. Clare’s Hospital in New York City on medical furloughs, said state Corrections Commissioner Thomas Coughlin. Mother Teresa, a Roman Catholic nun who has earned worldwide praise for her work with the poor in India, met the inmates during a visit to the prison.
