The Region : Pacific Bell Cancels Phone Experiment

An experimental TalkLine service in Orange County, which allowed up to 10 callers to converse at a time, has been canceled by Pacific Bell after parents became angry when their teen-age children ran up huge bills. The year-old party-line service caused a furor when some Orange County youths ran up bills ranging from $165 to $1,250. About 36 families received phone bills with more than $100 in charges for the service.
