Richard Charles Hunter, 39, who escaped from Ventura County Jail in 1984 while charged with attempted murder but was recaptured a day later, won a slight reduction of his sentence from the 2nd District Court of Appeal. The court’s Ventura Division struck a one-year enhancement or addition to his 12-year sentence because prosecutors failed to prove Hunter was previously convicted of bank robbery. But the justices upheld his sentences of nine years for trying to fire a gun at a police officer who was trying to arrest him for robbery in an Oxnard doughnut shop, two years for use of a firearm, and eight months for his jail escape. Hunter had holed up in an Oak View house with three adults and five children for seven hours before surrendering to detectives.
