Unbeaten Mater Dei Stays on Top

Mater Dei High School received all seven first-place votes and remained the top-ranked team in the Orange County Sportswriters’ Assn. prep boys’ basketball poll.
The Monarchs (16-0 this season) have won 45 consecutive games over the past two seasons. The Southern Section record is 66 established by Compton High in 1968-70.
In the featured games this week, second-ranked Capistrano Valley plays host to sixth-ranked Mission Viejo at Saddleback College and ninth-ranked Los Alamitos is at eighth-ranked Katella in Empire League play. Both games start at 7:30 Friday night.
