A fisherman from New Zealand has claimed a world record after catching a 494-pound striped marlin off New Zealand’s north coast.
The fisherman, Bill Boniface, told reporters he landed the fish late Thursday after 15 years of trying for a striped marlin.
Aided by a local lawyer and a district judge, he battled the fish for an hour on 49-pound tackle.
The fish broke the world record of 418 pounds for all-tackle and 371 pounds for 49-pound tackle. Both of those records were set off New Zealand.
