United postponed plans to increase some service.

The Chicago-based airline said it had to postpone service on Pan Am’s Pacific routes because the Japanese have refused to grant United landing rights in Japan. The carrier had been scheduled to service 13 cities starting Jan. 28. United’s decision was made following talks on the landing rights by U.S. and Japanese officials who met recently in Washington. The Japanese argue that granting landing rights to United, which has domestic routes in all 50 states, would put Japan Air Lines at a disadvantage.
